Its instructors, known as professors, teach students to leverage digital tools and strategies. They also mentor them on how to make money via social media marketing and e-commerce.

The professors, who are presented as highly successful entrepreneurs with claimed net worths in the millions, offer daily instructional videos to guide students in their business journey. Students have access to a treasure trove of resources, full lesson plans, and the opportunity to ask professors questions. They can also earn up to $1 million per month from their businesses and have a chance to become a “digital entrepreneur.”

But many of the thousands of members VICE News has spoken with are merely pawns for the influencer’s cult-like movement. They say they’re pushed to skip sleep and work unsustainably long hours in pursuit of their coursework, which is creating social media content that promotes Tate. The videos they produce act as a kind of decentralized PR army for the app.

Critics argue the program is a cynical grift that exploits impressionable teenagers and delivers them to an online forum — the War Room — where they’re trained to traffic women into sex work. They’ve also criticized the app for pushing misogyny and conspiracy theories, which are part of the influencer’s broader message to fight what Tate calls the matrix.
